Kevin McCarthy will step down as Speaker of the House and leave Congress

Following his removal as House Speaker, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, announced on Wednesday that he would be leaving his position in Congress.

McCarthy revealed the news in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece.

"We acted morally, regardless of the consequences to ourselves or the odds. While delivering results for the American people may seem archaic in Washington these days, it's still a national treasure. In this spirit, I have made the decision to leave the House at the end of this term in order to continue serving the people of America. "I am aware that my work is just beginning," McCarthy wrote. "I'll keep encouraging the most talented people in our nation to run for public office. Every day, the Republican Party gains ground.
